Relief Measures for Haitian Nationals
As a result
of the devastating effects of the earthquake in Haiti
on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the United States
government has implemented a number of measures to aid Haitian
nationals
currently in the United States.
On
Friday, January 15, 2010,
Homeland Security
Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS)
has designated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals
who were
in the United States
on January 12, 2010.
This announcement has tremendous
implications
for Haitian nationals living in the United States,
because it will
allow them to continue to live and work in the United States
for 18
months.
In
addition, Alejandro N. Mayorkas,
the director of the United States Citizen and Immigration Services
(USCIS)
issued a memo to the field leadership of the USCIS notifying them of
relief
efforts that the USCIS has undertaken for Haitian nationals who may
fall
outside the scope of the TPS designation.
